UNDERGROUND RAILROAD PLANS FOR THE NEAR FUTURE |

ABOUT THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD COMMITTEE OF MORGAN COUNTY, ILLINOIS |
The State
of Illinois has already given our Underground Railroad committee the heads
up that in May of 2005, when the Lincoln Museum in Springfield opens, we
will see a significant increase in tourism to our Underground Railroad
attractions.
In addition to Woodlawn Farm, Jacksonville has several other sites, making it the richest city in Illinois for such sites. In addition, it appears Illinois College will become an Underground Research Center and that Woodlawn Farm will be designated by the National Park Service. There is an enormous amount of work to do, yet much progress has already been made. We just concluded a very successful UGRR event in combination with Illinois College. Our plan for the UGRR in Jacksonville will be to make it as strong an attraction as Lincoln's New Salem is for Petersburg. We will be connected to the national UGRR project and will also work in conjunction with other Illinois UGRR communities to plan larger state-wide events. The economic potential of Jacksonville's UGRR will impact the community for years to come. |
The UGRR Committee of the Morgan
County Historical Society has applied for NPS recognition for several of
our sites in Morgan County. We are researching other sites and will apply
for recognition for these as well. We recently learned that the Congregational
Church has been accepted and will be listed on the Network to Freedom website,
The committee hopes to have more of our current sites recognized in the
near future.
